Tips on starting a blog!

Hello, so I'm going to give my opinions and tips on how to get a successful blog. I'm aware that my blog is pretty new and you may be thinking "what does she know?" but I feel like I have had a lot of experience in what people like and what they don't like. As I have mentioned before I started a different blog about a year and a half ago, I feel like that is what taught me almost everything I need to know. When I look back at my blog (I still have it but it is on private!) I pick out everything that is wrong with it, (pretty much everything!) I also visit other people's blogs and pick out things that they could improve on. So I'm going to give you some tips on how to improve your blog or if you are thinking about starting one here are some (hopefully) helpful tips!

#1 BIG photos!
I cannot tell you how much it annoys me when I go onto blogs and they have tiny pictures! If you upload a photo to blogger and publish it , it will be small! Once you have added a photo to your blogpost, click on "Edit Html" next to "Compose"

You see in the code where it says s320? Delete the 320.

Then add 800, so it becomes "s800" instead of "s320"

Where is says "height" and then a number followed by "px"

Delete it, so next to height there is no number.

Find "width" and delete "320" replace it with however big you want your picture to be.

I change it to 600 but play around with it and see how big you want your pictures to be!

#2 Have a proper header
My one is super simple! I download fonts from dafont and use Gimp, but it works on Photoshop. You can even use paint, picasa and so many other free programmes!

#3 Show images of yourself.
It has been proven that people are more likely to follow your blog if they see a human face, I have a photo of myself in the side bar of my blog. It just means that your reader knows what you look like and makes the blog a lot more personal.

#4 Frequent posting
I blog A LOT, but you don't need to post every day but you also shouldn't leave it months between posts. Also keep blogging consistent, don't blog everyday one week and then leave it three weeks before posting again. It will confuse your readers!

#5 Have a good camera
You don't need to shell out on a DSLR, you can use a simple digital camera. But try and stay away from using your phone or a poor quality camera. Your followers want to be able to see the pictures! Make sure all photos are in focus! You can watch quick tutorials on Youtube or even just read the manual of your camera to get to grips with it more!

#6 Show your personality
There is nothing more dull than reading blog post that just states facts, get your personality across to your followers, make jokes and add little anecdotes into your posts!

#7 Get to grips with HTML coding
I'm not saying to know your HTML code off by heart, but know how to do things such as centre text in a post and change the sizes. If you want to change something on your blog just google it! It's what I do and there are so many websites that can help you!

#8 URL
Think of a cute URL, mine took ages to come up with but I love it! It will stick in peoples minds and they will remember it if it's unusual or cute!

#9 Comment on other blogs
If you are wanting to get your blog out there comment on other peoples posts. Even leaving something as simple as "lovely blog post" followed by your blog link will increase the chance of people visiting your blog. I leave comments on every blog post I read and give a link to my blog. I have got so many more visitors because of this.

#10 Reply to comments
If you get a comment, reply to it. Interact with your followers, be friendly! Simple!

#11 Use social media sites
Get a twitter, an Instagram or a Tumblr account. You can promote your blog and get more people reading it! Twitter is especially good, if you do a review of a certain product, tweet the company. They often RT your tweet, gaining you more visitors!

#12 Write about what you love
If you are blogging about something that interests you, people will be able to tell! There's no point in me blogging about cars as I have no interest and will hardly blog. If you are blogging about what you love you will actually want to post, it will also give you something to talk about with your followers!

#13 Add your email/twitter to your blog
This will give your followers the chance to interact with you and for you to make friends with other bloggers!

#14 Good layout

Don't have a crowded layout or write in colours that is impossible to read! Make your blog easy to read and uncluttered!

#15 Proof read before publishing
Also re-read your blog post before publishing, I ALWAYS make tiny mistakes which I can correct when I re-read the post. It's not fun to read a post with grammar or spelling mistakes!

I hope this post was helpful, remember these are just my tips! You may completely disagree with me!

What tips do you have for blogging?

  2. Not gonna lie, the thing that makes me click on a blog on a network such as hellocotton is the clear photos, and how pretty I think they are.. I've said it with many websites I've created, look at other people for inspiration, but don't copy the whole thing! It's easy to get an idea of what you like and don't like. Very important.

    1. I totally agree! Larger and clearer photos are so much more appealing than tiny out of focus ones! I have definitely developed my blog by looking at others and seeing what I do and don't like! :) xx
